WLAN Survey [Shipley] [Wyatt] [Aaron] [Seric] [Cal]
A 18 month research procject to collect and analyze statistics on open 802.11 (Wi-Fi) networks in the San Francisco Bay Area. Currently we have several systems installed in the trunk of several cars with the ablility to locate, identify and log open Wireless IP networks at speed of 30-60Mph. location via GPS, SSID, bridge hardware information, IP allocation and channel are recorded.
The resulting database will be used to generate statical represention of the Wireless network security problem so it can be properly addressed.
SecurityFocus has a news commentary of the work in progress.
The Wall Street Journal also did a write-up on this work.
Slides containing early results are available on the DoC Filez page
Wardial Demographic Analysis [Dover]
Collect and analyze the results of over a year of wardialing in the BayArea. As of 12/1/97, after three years of effort, the sample size is over two hundred (216) exchanges scanned, over two point million numbers (2086505) and over twenty-one thousand (21534) modem carriers.
A side effect of this project is that I will be releasing a bunch of Unix programs for the processing toneloc data files. (See a article in PCWeek for some of the early result infomation)
Status: Done results published in DoC Filez page
Radio WWW page [Oldwolf] [Wyatt] [Dover]

IR Conversion for QV-10 [Dover]
Mod'ing the Casio QV-10 Digital camera to be IR sensitive.
The Casio QV-10 is a low end (read cheap) Digital camera, I have modified the camera to be more infrared sensitive thus enabling it to be used to take pictures in total or near darkness with a IR source.

Radio Burst Cannon (RBC) [Sinster]
Not quite a HERF gun, but close. The RBC should be able to produce up to or less than one Megawatt for up to several milliseconds. More then enough to fry most computers from a minor distance. Version one will be a proof-of-concept device. Versions two or three will use higher energy and wave guides for a stonger and tighter energy bursts.
Status: Done
