IC-Q7a Radio Guide

The DoC is proud to present a resource for radio hacking and experimentation.

This reference is for the ICOM IC-q7a, it is advised that people use their radio responsibly and legally.

Features

The IS-Q7 is a radio of choice for those that need small scanner/receiver with occasional local transmission ability (350mW max). It's small size ( 2.3 (W), 3.75 (H), 1.1 (D) inches, 6 oz (0.375 lb) ) makes it a ideal pocket or travel radio.

Designed for amateur Ham radio dual band use in the 2m and 70cm (144MHz and 440MHz), this radio features wide band receive from 30 up to 1300MHz and can be modified to provide exceptional dual band transmission range.

The ablity to receive in the HF, VHF, UHF and SHF (30Mhz up to 1.3Ghz) is very useful in such a small package for day to day use or when you need to travel light.

Powered by two AA batteries, this unit is a winner when traveling or for emergency backup use since no special power adapters are needed, and a looser for any long term use given its lack of external power options. But as a backup or emergency unit, it can be packed away with a few sets of alkaline batteries with a 3 or 4 year shelf life out living any thing that depends on NiCds.

The main shortcomings of this unit is that is only supports CTCSS (no DPL) and has a relatively low power output (less then 350 mW on averge). Also missing is the ability to access cross-band repeaters, alphanumeric memory tags, and DTMF. The lack of a External DC power/charge input jack make a separate battery charger a requirement, thus extra hardware to pack.

Manual

For a printed copy please contact the manufacturer

Reset: Hold [FUNC] & [BAND] & [V/M] buttons and turn the radio on.

Moding

The IC-q7a is somewhat unique by combining wide band receive (30MHz to 1.3GHz, cellular blocked) and extended transmission ranges (144-148MHz and 440-450MHz).

Simple hardware modification is required for expanded transmission range of (136-174MHz and 400-470MHz).
